National Observatory of Athens
Remote sensing of Aerosols, Clouds and Trace gases (ReACT) is the Atmospheric RS Research Unit operating under the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). The scientific mission of ReACT is to promote world-class research towards understanding the Mediterranean climate and the regional processes that lead to extreme weather. To achieve its mission, the experimental and theoretical work of ReACT is dedicated to: (a) the development of new atmospheric remote sensing technologies, (b) the operation of observing facilities for continuously monitoring of the atmosphere, (c) the development of new retrievals from ground-based and spaceborne remote sensors, (d) the utilization and improvement of Earth System Models in synergy with observations to study atmospheric processes. In LANDSHIFT, team members of NOA-ReACT will provide their expertise with respect to Earth System Models and ground-measurements to meet the key challenges of the project.
Role in LandShift
In LandShift, NOA is involved in two work packages, leading two tasks regarding climate assessment and biogenic emissions, respectively. In a nutshell, NOA will assess the evolution of climate change and future projections at the regional scale within the participating regions, by identifying distinct climatic zones within the studied regions and establish a robust framework for ensuring the necessary quality control of the acquired data. In addition, NOA will support the provision of the necessary framework to transfer the relevant information on GHG emissions from the global, regional, and local scales over the participating pilots, by uptaking CAMS products at the regional and local level and applying dynamical downscaling to selected case studies in each pilot region.
