University of Rome «Tor Vergata»
The Earth Observation Laboratory (EO Lab) is located at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” in Italy, and belongs to the Department of Civil Engineering and Computer Science Engineering. The EO Lab supports multidisciplinary research and teaching activities, with interactions between Earth Observation, Remote Sensing, Aerospace, Geo-Information, Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science engineering.
The EO Lab group was established in 1984 under the leadership of Prof. Solimini, whose Remote Sensing course was the first of its kind offered in Italian universities. In 2001, we introduced the PhD program in Geoinformation, resulting in 57 PhD theses focused on Earth Observation topics. We have secured research, R&D contracts and projects with prestigious organizations such as ESA, ASI, EUMETSAT, FAO, and the EU. Our work has been published in leading international Remote Sensing journals, and we have been involved in international conferences organization. Four spin-off companies also originated from the EO Lab.
Role in LandShift
As part of WP2, titled “Past, Present, and Future LULUC Assessment of LandShift LSs,” we will focus on Task 2.5, which involves “Exploring the interactions between land cover changes, climate, and policies: AI models for assessing the drivers of LULUCF, links with policies and climate change.” With our extensive experience on the application of AI to EO data, we will mainly assist in assessing the interlinks of LULUCF with climate change and identifying the interactions and dependencies which are affecting LULUCF systems. The outcomes from this Task will provide valuable feedback to T2.2, enhancing the initial climate change assessment and projection and will serve as foundational inputs for the subsequent Work Packages (WP3-5), ensuring the coherent progression of the project’s objectives.
